Mount Kenya National Park

Introduction

Mount Kenya, Africa’s second-highest peak after Kilimanjaro, is one of the continent’s most spectacular natural wonders. Rising dramatically to 5,199 meters (17,057 ft), this ancient volcanic mountain is the crown jewel of central Kenya, surrounded by lush forests, alpine moorlands, dramatic cliffs, and shimmering glaciers. It is both a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, celebrated for its unique ecological zones and breathtaking scenery.

Widlife & Attractions
A Mountain of Beauty and Biodiversity

Mount Kenya is renowned for its amazing diversity of landscapes. As you ascend its slopes, you pass through distinct ecological zones—from dense bamboo and indigenous forests to high-altitude moorlands filled with giant lobelias and senecios. The mountain hosts a rich array of wildlife, including elephants, buffalo, Colobus monkeys, bushbucks, and unique bird species such as the scarlet-tufted malachite sunbird.

Above the tree line, the landscape becomes surreal. Rock spires, alpine lakes, and glacial valleys create views unlike anywhere else in East Africa.

The Peaks of Mount Kenya

Mount Kenya has three main peaks:

  • Batian (5,199m) – the highest peak, requiring technical climbing skills

  • Nelion (5,188m) – another technical summit

  • Point Lenana (4,985m) – the most accessible peak, popular among trekkers

Most hikers aim for Point Lenana, a non-technical but challenging trek offering magnificent sunrise views over the Kenyan plains.

For the Kikuyu people, Mount Kenya—known as Kirinyaga, meaning “Place of Brightness”—is a sacred mountain. It is believed to be the home of Ngai, the creator. Traditionally, prayers and rituals were performed facing the mountain, symbolizing respect and connection to nature.
Why Visit Mount Kenya?

Mount Kenya is perfect for nature lovers, adventure travelers, photographers, and hikers looking for an unforgettable African mountain experience. Whether you’re chasing the sunrise from Point Lenana or exploring the forested foothills, every moment on Mount Kenya is filled with wonder.
